Saturday 28 April 2001 I installed the B&M short shift kit. The kit comes with an installation manual, which is specific for the Celica GT(-s). Therefore, here’s the one for the Spyder.
ENJOY! |
1 |
The box containing the shift kit. |
2 |
…and what’s inside… The kit comes with a new shift stick, shift knob, a tube of grease, 4 bolds, spacers, and some extra stuff you don’t need. |
3 |
And this needs to be opened ! |
4 |
First remove the shift knob (as you could see in the previous pic, I changed the stock one with a momo one, see the SpyderShopper !!) |
5 |
There are two screws which you cant remove using a normal screw driver. Therefore, you have to remove the seats, or, buy the thing shown in the pic !! |
6 |
Here I’m removing the second screw, one at each side. |
7 |
The center console is also attached with two screws in the back. Just slide the seats to the front, and you can reach them. |
8 |
Make sure you have your car not in any gear, and your parking break is enabled !! To remove the console, you can lift it up. I removed the part shown, since else it wouldn’t go over the parking break. |
9 |
Make sure you do not damage any wires, so place the center console on the driver seat (most of the work needs to be done on the passenger side !). |
10 |
Close up. |
11 |
Here you see the direct shift kit I already installed a couple of months ago. It is the red spacers. |
12 |
First you have to remove a pin. Use a screwdriver to push it out. Once out a little, just pull it out. In case you ruin it, a new one is delivered in the kit !!! |
13 |
Here I pull it out. |
14 |
Now remove this sucker. If you are careful, you can preserve it. If not, also a new one is included in the kit. |
15 |
Removed ! This was the hardest part of the whole install ! |
16 |
Remove the clip I’m pointing to. |
17 |
Clip removed. |
18 |
Now you can remove the second part. First remove the cable from the end . |
19 |
Then slowly pull it out… |
20 |
And out… |
21 |
Now you can remove the upper part, just lift it up. |
22 |
Also remove this part, just lift it also !. |
23 |
The stock shift handle seems to be free now…. |
24 |
WRONG !! it is attached to the second cable underneath !! |
25 |
Remove the clip holding both secure. |
26 |
And pull the handle out. Make sure some towels are available to clean your hands from all the grease. Else it might ruin your interior. |
27 |
Another close-up pic.. |
28 |
We now have to install the blue spacers on the right together with a new set of bolts... |
29 |
Remove the bolts securing the shift kit. Here you see clearly the red spacers from the direct shift kit. In case of an original shift boot, you will see metal spacers with a rubber housing inside. Remove these. |
30 |
And put the blue ones in.. |
31 |
Secure them with the bolts which come with the kit… |
32 |
Two pics of the stock shift handle and the new one (right) |
33 |
The new one is shorter, and misses some curves. |
34 |
Remove the two white caps on the old shift handle. DO NOT USE a screwdriver as indicated in the original manual. Use your hands to pull them off (first remove the grease to get some grip). With the screwdriver you will damage the inside of the caps. (I damaged one like that). |
35 |
Put grease on the knobs of the new handle. |
36 |
And put on the caps |
37 |
Both caps on J |
38 |
Now put the handle in the car ! |
39 |
Re-attach the bottom cable. |
40 |
Overview pic. |
41 |
Put grease on the top of the handle. |
42 |
Put the circled shaped plastic cap back on |
43 |
And the other thing securing everything.. |
44 |
That looks ok. |
45 |
Put the metal lever back. |
46 |
Reattach the cap removed in the beginning. |
47 |
And put the clip back. After that the pin in the front, and test if you can get into all gears. If so, |
48 |
Put the console back in place. |
49 |
And here’s the finished product !! |

My impression is that the improves the shifting enormously. The first few times you need to adjust to it since the shift stick is moved more to the left, and is also much sturdier to move. Once you are used to it, you can change gears much faster (app. 300 rpm drop between shifts).
Hope you liked this installation manual !
