Installation
of Postert Exhaust System – by Mercury (UK MR2) The exhaust system comes in 3 parts, the main silencer and two down pipes. Also included is a bracket for the right hand side down pipe. The system is stainless steel but painted in high temp black paint for better heat dissipation. I noticed that the system also weighs a little less than stock. First job was to remove the black plastic engine guards. The Cat has also got to be removed to allow enough room to remove the silencer. This is quite easy although you will need a long reach extension on your wrench to get to the bolts. I removed the Cat without jacking up the car as the trolley jack gets in the way. Then I jacked the car up and removed the 4 bolts holding the multi link roll bar (2 each side). The next job was to remove the silencer rubber mountings which were a little difficult. However I used a rubber solution (washing liquid will also do) and a flat blade screw driver. With the car jacked up a few inches (usual safety precautions applied) I was able to lower the silencer out of the way. Now for the Postert installation. I decided to just fit the silencer part first and install the down pipes after. This made installation easy and everything fitted well to the standard locations. I then installed the left hand down pipe, which utilizes the standard bracket, and again this lined up well. However the bracket for the right hand down pipe didn’t allow the tailpipe to look the same as the left hand side. This problem seems common as most of the pictures I’ve seen of TTE and Postert show a crooked right hand tail. I didn’t want this so I heated and bent the bracket to allow perfect alignment. This bracket uses one of the bolt mountings for the rear link bar. After the silencer is installed then the bracket can be mounted. The down pipe now lines up equally. Leave at least 5mm gap between the tips and bodywork to stop the heat melting it. Check all the mountings are good including the Cat bolts and the black plastic guard can be refitted. However slight modification to the black plastic guard is required to for the right hand side down pipe. I cut very carefully to still allow the guard to use all the existing mountings. When all is complete then it’s time to start the engine. I checked all the connections to ensure a gas tight fit. The system makes a great low down noise on tick over, sort of a rumble. This changes to a nice scream at high revs. It is loud when you want it to be loud and quiet when you’re just cruising. Apart from that the two tailpipes look great but not over the top. The
power increase is noticeable. It has boosted power from 4, 000 revs to
the redline without sacrificing any low down torque. I can’t wait to
try it with the K & N filter I have on order. |
